Night and lamps

Set a dark time of day and set which painted lamps cast light

A fig with painted light casts light when it stands in a scene. The light is painted in the fig editor and is kept with the fig in every scene. Lamps cast at any time of day and show most in a dark one.

A dark time of day

Open Atmosphere and the Light door. Time of day holds the presets. The dark ones are Night, Midnight, Cellar, Witching hour, and Blood moon. Midnight keeps a dim moon. Cellar has no moon, so lamps are the only light.

The Moods door sets the same in one tap: Cozy night, Firefly night, Midnight spook, Witching hour, and Blood moon. Firefly night adds a sky of fireflies. They are part of the sky, not lamps, and cast no light.

Which lamps cast shadows

The sun and the two brightest painted lamps cast shadows. Every other lamp lights the surfaces around it without a shadow. See Light and shadow .

One lamp at a time

Tap a placed lamp on the Figs tab. Its page has a Glow row: Casting or Off. Off keeps the painted glow and stops the light. Under it, Light play sets Steady, Blink, Slow, or Flicker.

The Glow row is hidden in the Flat and Pixel looks.

Buildings pass light through windows

A drawn building has no light of its own. A lamp inside it lights the ground outside through its windows and skylights. A Window wall is a window too. Sunlight passes in the same way, onto the floor. Doors block light, the Glass door included, and so do garage doors.

The light through a window has its own switch. Tap the window on the Figs tab. Its page has a Glow row. Casting lets the lamp inside light the outside. Off keeps that window dark.

Building a night scene

  1. Select a dark time of day.
  2. Place figs with painted light where you want light.
  3. Set Glow to Off on any lamp that should stay dark.
