Color Color phase

Smudge brush

Drag color across the surface to soften an edge or blend two colors.

Smudge drags color. It takes the color where the stroke starts and mixes it into everything the stroke crosses.

The Mode row

Smudge is a mode of the Pen, not a separate tool. In the Paint screen, tap Pen and its settings open. Under Size, Strength, and Smoothing, the Mode row has five options:

The Pen settings. Draw places pixels. Smudge drags them.
  • Draw places pixels.
  • Smudge drags them.
  • Spray scatters dots. Its own row sets Solid or Misty.
  • Jumble shuffles the pixels under the brush.
  • Blur averages them.

The Size row works for every mode. Size 1 works on single pixels. Bigger sizes sweep wider. Strength is for Draw: Full covers, Soft mixes half the color in per stroke, Faint a quarter.

The stroke

  • The stroke takes the color under its starting pixel.
  • As it moves, the carried color mixes half and half with each pixel it passes, so a long stroke fades from one color into the next.
  • Spray, Jumble, and Blur keep working while the finger holds still.
  • In Smudge, Spray, Jumble, and Blur, holding still does not take a color. Switch back to Draw to take colors again.
