Dioramas

Make a photo diorama

Put your Flatlings inside a real photograph. Ünflat splits its front from its back, and they stand right in the picture.

Make a photo diorama to stand your Flatlings inside a real photograph: your desk, your street, your bookshelf. Ünflat splits the photo’s front from its back, so Flatlings don’t just sit on top of the picture; they stand in it.

Pick the photo

In a diorama, open the Backdrop drawer and press Make a photo diorama (the Photo backdrop chip does the same). Choose Take a photo or Camera roll, then frame it: Frame it drags and pinches the shot into frame, Warp it pulls four dots around a skewed shot and straightens it. Press Use this photo and the photo becomes the backdrop. The camera sits on a tripod now, locked to the photo’s point of view.

Set the floor

Press Set the floor and a doormat grid appears. Drag its four corners onto something flat in the photo: a rug, a tile, a patch of ground. The little box on the grid shows how big a Flatling will be, so you can judge the scale. The 🎛 Nudge button swaps to fine-tune buttons for sliding, tilting, and lens width. When the grid lies flat on the photo, press ✓ Looks flat! and Flatlings stand right on your photo.

Cut out the front

Press Foreground and scribble over the things that should stand IN FRONT of your Flatlings: the plant, the fence, the mug at the photo’s edge. Chunky is charming; there are three brush sizes and an eraser. Press ✂️ Cut them out! and each blob becomes a cutout standee. Flatlings can now walk behind them, and you can slide each standee nearer or farther in Top-down .

Match the light and the look

The photo drawer: set the floor, cut the front, pick the look.

The Sun section aims the light: drag the puck around the disc to set where the sun sits, with Bright and Warm sliders and a Match photo button that samples the photo for a starting point. Photo look picks how the photo is drawn: Match style dresses it like your Flatlings, Pixel and Flipnote go retro, Original leaves it untouched.

Take the picture

Place your Flatlings, then open the Photo studio with the 📸 button and press 3 · 2 · 1. The shot captures the photo, the standees, and the Flatlings between them, exactly as you see it.

The layering is the trick: photo at the back, Flatlings in the middle, standees in front. One scribbled mug turns a flat picture into a place.
