Move sets

Steps played in order: saved poses, gestures, loops. A scene plays the one you choose.

A move set is steps played in order. A step is a saved pose, a gesture, a walk or a loop. Move sets is the second row under the Poses caption in the Animate list. Its head line reads Steps in order: saved poses, gestures, loops. A scene plays the one you choose for a fig. ▶ Play is in the page’s header. The page affects this fig.

The row’s note reads poses · gestures · loops before the first set, the set’s name when there is one, and 3 made after that.

The Move sets page with the set Cheer: the Move set dropdown, the list box of steps with step 1 open, Add a step, When it ends, then Rename and Remove.

Make a move set

Use the Move set dropdown to choose the set the page shows. The list ends with New move set…. Tap it, name the set (Name the new move set, for example Cheer), and tap Make it. The hint reads Cheer is ready. Add a step: a saved pose, a gesture or a loop.

With no set yet the dropdown reads None yet and the page reads A move set plays steps in order. Make one with New move set. It affects this whole fig.

Its steps

Its steps is a list box. Its caption counts the steps and adds up their seconds: Its steps · 3 · 3.95 s. Each line starts with its number and reads what the step is, then its facts:

  • a saved pose: Crouch · 0.65 s · in and out
  • a gesture or a walk: Wave · gesture · once, Walk · gesture · twice
  • a loop: Bounce · loop · 2 s

Tap a line to open it. One line is open at a time, and the fig shows that step’s pose while it is open. Tap the line again to shut it, and the working pose is back on the fig. An empty set reads No steps yet. Add one below.

A step whose saved pose was removed reads A pose that was removed · choose another. Open it and choose another under What.

An open step

What is the first row of an open step. Use it to change what the step is. It holds the same list as Add a step. Swapping a pose for a pose keeps the step’s timing.

A saved pose has two more rows:

  • Takes: how long the fig takes to reach the pose, from 0.1 s to 3 s. A new step starts at 0.65 s.
  • Gets there: how it moves into the pose. Ease in, Ease out, Ease in and out, or Straight. A new step starts on the fig’s own setting from Playback & physics .

A gesture or a walk has:

  • Plays: Once, Twice, 3 times, 4 times, 6 times or 8 times. Each choice shows its seconds.
  • On: the parts it plays on. This row is a line of words. The parts are chosen on Preset moves .

A loop has:

  • On: a dropdown of the fig’s parts. Choose the part that loops.
  • Holds for: how long the loop plays, from 0.5 s to 10 s. A new step starts at 2 s.

Every open step ends with Order. moves the step earlier, moves it later, and the coral Remove removes this step from the set and nothing else.

Add a step

Add a step is one dropdown in four groups:

  • Saved poses: At rest, then every pose saved on Pose by hand .
  • Gestures: the gestures from Preset moves.
  • Walk & run: the walking cycles from Preset moves.
  • Loops: the idle loops.

Choose one and the step goes to the end of the list and opens. A new loop is applied to the part chosen on the page, else to a part that plays that loop, else to the Body. Change it under On.

A move this fig cannot do stays in the list, greyed, with the reason beside it. Tap a greyed row and the reason opens under Add a step with a button that goes to the fix:

  • With no saved poses, A saved pose is greyed and noted none saved yet. The button reads Save a pose in Pose by hand ›.
  • A gesture that plays on a part you choose is noted set it up in Preset moves. The button reads Set it up in Preset moves ›.
  • A move that needs a named part offers a button into Rig .

When it ends

Use When it ends to set what follows the last step.

  • Start again: the set plays again from step 1, going on from the last pose.
  • Hold the last pose: the fig stays as the last step left it.
  • Go back to rest: the fig returns to rest.

Play

Tap ▶ Play in the header. The steps play from top to bottom, the open step shuts, and the button reads ■ Stop. A pose step moves every posed part from where the step before left it. A gesture or a loop plays on top of the pose the fig holds. Playing changes nothing in the set. With no steps the hint reads Nothing to play yet. Add a step first.

Rename and remove

Under the caption This move set, with the set’s name, Rename opens the name dialog. The coral Remove asks first: Remove the move set “Cheer” and its 3 steps? The saved poses and the moves on the fig stay.

A move set from before steps

A move set made before move sets had steps holds every move the fig had when it was saved. It opens as one step, Everything it did · as before, and plays as before. Choosing it in the Move set dropdown applies its moves to the fig, and the hint reads Walk is active. Edits save into it.

Open the step and it reads Legacy move set detected. Retains original animation. New steps will sequence before it. Add a step and the set becomes a set of steps. Everything it did stays as step 1 and gains a Plays for slider, from 0.5 s to 20 s. Removing that step removes the moves it held.

A fig saved with a run of poses for the whole fig opens with that run as a move set named Pose to pose. Each saved pose is one step.

Keyframes on a part

Keyframes on a part is the line at the foot of the page. It reads none yet, on one part or on 3 parts. Tap it to open it. It affects one part: pose the part, keep each pose as a keyframe, and the part plays through them in every move the fig makes. It is not a step of a move set. A part holds up to six keyframes with Plus. The free plan keeps two.

  • Part: the part the keyframes belong to. A tap on the fig chooses it too.
  • Keyframe: the pose the sliders edit. A new pose is the one the next keyframe is made from. Keyframe 2 of 3 edits a kept one.
  • Swing, Turn, Bend, Lift, Slide, Size and Around are the part’s sliders, the same as on Pose by hand . You can drag the part on the fig too.
  • Keep as keyframe 1 keeps the pose. The number counts up with each one you keep.
  • With a kept keyframe chosen, Earlier and Later move it in the order, and the coral Remove keyframe 2 removes it.

A line under Keyframe gives the state: No keyframes yet. Pose the part, then keep it as keyframe 1., Keyframe 1 saved. Pose the part again, then keep it as keyframe 2., or Editing keyframe 2 of 3. On a part that holds a pose from Pose by hand, the one button reads Make it keyframe 1.

A part that plays a preset move shows no keyframes here. The block reads Left arm plays Wave. with the button Its move is in Preset moves ›.

Playback

Playback shows once the part has a keyframe. It affects this part.

  • Speed: from 40% to 250%.
  • Strength: scales every keyframe at once, from 25% to 250%.
  • Starts: when the keyframes play. A line under it says what the choice does.
    • Always: the keyframes loop on their own (a propeller).
    • On touch: a tap starts the loop, and the next tap stops it.
    • Once: a tap plays one cycle, then the part returns to rest (a wave).
    • Open: a tap plays to the last keyframe and holds. The next tap plays back (a door).
  • ▶ Play runs the keyframes and becomes ■ Stop. While it plays, the sliders do not respond.
  • Pause this part’s keyframes holds the part still with its keyframes kept. The row then reads Resume.

In Showtime , everything set to Always plays. Tap a part to fire Once, Open, or On touch. Tapping a part fires every part attached to it too, so tapping the body makes the whole fig play. An attached part with no trigger of its own fires the nearest part that carries it and has one.

In a scene

A scene plays the move set you choose for a fig. On the scene’s Animate tab, select one fig with the Select bar. Under Its own, the Move set dropdown lists As saved and each set by name. The Move set chip on the fig’s page in the Figs window and the Moves row on the World tab’s Picked page hold the same list. Two copies of one fig can play different sets.

A Walk or Run path given to a fig selects the set with the same name for that copy, with a toast: Truck also plays its Walk set.

When a fig has keyframes on its parts, Its moves play shows under Its own: On their own clock or On the beat, which times the keyframes to the scene’s tempo. See Scene animation .

Export

A move set made of steps is in the .glb file as one animation clip, named after the set. The clip plays the steps the way this page plays them, at the fig’s Frame rate. Start again loops cleanly, Hold the last pose ends on that pose, and Go back to rest includes the return to rest. Springy is not in the clip.

A move set from before steps exports as before: one clip named after the set. A set from before steps that gained steps is one clip, the steps. A fig with none of the older sets also exports the moves on the fig as one clip named after the fig.

The Roblox export holds a move set made of steps as frames the plugin plays in order, at the fig’s Frame rate, with its When it ends. A set from before steps is exported as before. A bend or a squash in a set is not exported: Roblox has no joint for it. Keyframes on a part are exported in the .glb as animation clips. The Starts choice is not exported. See Export a .glb .
