The Flat look

The Flat render style, its cel light, and its Shading and Outline rows.

Flat is the third render style : solid color shapes on a paper-cream page, shaded in cel steps.

Cel light

  • The sun shades every shape in flat steps, a lit side and a shade side with a clean edge between them. Move the sun and the edge moves around the shapes.
  • Shadows are always on; there is no switch. In Flat, the sun panel in Atmosphere is called Position shadows. Drag the sun to aim them.
  • Lamps light in bands. A painted lamp draws a bright core and a wider ring of its color on what is around it, and walls block them. The two brightest lamps in a scene do this. In daytime presets the bands are faint; in dark ones they show in full.

Shading and Outline

Flat’s rows are in Atmosphere under Style:

  • Shading: Soft, Classic, or Bold sets how strong the cel steps look.
  • Outline: None, Thin, or Ink. None is the default. The same three are at the foot of the menu bar’s Look menu as No outline, Thin outline, and Ink outline.

Pixel is Flat drawn in a small buffer. It is fixed on Bold shading and has its own switches, Dither the shadow edge and Outline.

What stays flat

Flat has no shine and no haze. Fill’s Effect dropdown omits Water, Shiny, Paper, Cardboard, and Metal in Flat, and faces that have them show as plain color. Light, Glass, Sparkle, and Clear stay. Light paint stays full bright. Glass faces are real half-see-through panes in Flat and Pixel, the same as Handheld. Fog is off in Flat. Switching into Flat and back out changes nothing about the fig.
